Demystifying the rough process, Guiding principle, rough, preparers, To maximize the rough that De Toledo Diamonds’ produces,
each stone is analysed with different clients’ needs in mind, and then cleaved and sawn accordingly. The end model, particularly
the final height of a stone, is the result of a particular client’s need. This stone is an example of a makeable with multiple inclusions,
therefore it needs to be cleaved. Because the inclusions are only located in one part of the stone, the process of cleaving isolates the inclusions
to only one of the final stones. These are the two stones produced from the cleaving process. The inclusion is now only located in one of the stones,
the one on the right, which means that the quality in the other stone has dramatically increased compared to the original stone. The stone on the left
would be polished to produce a round stone and the stone on the right is a fantazi shaped model.
This is a clear example of a sawable stone. The stone’s grains can clearly be seen on the top half of the stone. Where the grains stop is where the stone would be sawn.
The result from sawing is a clean top carré of VS clarity, which can be seen in the photo on the left; and a clivage stone of I3 clarity located on the right.
The clivage stone would then be cleaved to produce a baguette and a kap, which can be viewed in stone 3.
This is a clivage stone similar to the stone produced from the sawing process shown in stone 2. To maximize the outcome of this stone cleaving would be undertaken.
The outcome of cleaving this stone would be one cleanish baguette of SI1 clarity, which can be viewed on the left and a kap of I2 clarity. The process of cleaving
has isolated the inclusions in the cheaper range kap model.
This is a crystal stone model of VS1 clarity. The stone would be maximized by sawing the stone to produce two carré stones.
The point at which the stone is sawn depends on current client demand for particular sizes. The outcome of sawing is two carré stones,
which could potentially be used to produce princess cuts. This is a six carat makeable clivage stone that has multiple inclusions.
To isolate the inclusions from the clean part of the stone, the stone would be cleaved multiple times. The stones that result from the cleaving process include a
fantazi model of SI1 clarity, which can be viewed on the left and also a clivage sawable which would then be sawn in accordance with the pen marking,
which can be further viewed in stone 6.
This is the clivage sawable that resulted from the cleaving process shown in stone 5. The majority of the inclusions are located in the upper part of the
stone- above the line drawn. Sawing would occur on this line to isolate the inclusions in the stone produced from the top half.
The outcomes of the sawing process would be a baguette model of SI2 clarity which can be seen on the left; and a sawn clivage top. The sawn clivage top would
then be further prepared which can be viewed in stone 7. This is the sawn clivage derived from stone 6. The stone can be sold as it is, but it is of very poor
quality and yield because the inclusions control the stone. Therefore the stone would be cleaved again to further isolate the inclusions.
The resultant stones are both kaz models, identifiable by the two smooth cuts obtained from being both the sawn and cleaved.
This is a sawable stone with inclusions all along the right side of the stone. The stone would be cleaved.
The stones produced from the cleaving process are a fantazi shaped model which can be viewed on the left; and a sawable stone. There are two different
ways in which this sawable stone can now be prepared. Firstly, an evaluation is conducted, projecting the different scenarios for maximizing the yield and
then the decision of which way to saw the stone is determined by current market demand for particular models and sizes. View stones 9 and 10 to see the flexibility
of options available through the company’s rough preparing process. This is the first option of how to saw the sawable stone shown in the outcome of stone 8.
This would be the preferred option if baguettes are in demand. The models resulting from the sawing process include a baguette which can be viewed on the right
and a round pictured on the left. This is the second option of how to saw the sawable stone shown in the outcome of stone 8. This would be the preferred option
if marquises are in demand. The stones produced from the sawing process include a marquise which can be viewed on the right and a round pictured on the left.
